In the news...

I posted this video a while back so, I apologize if it is a bit redundant. HOWEVER, my designer, Cole, who is currently in the works of giving me a face lift and responsible for the design of the Film is Not Dead website and workbook, and my brother in law Micah, won what is called a Pencil for this piece at The One Show out in NYC. They are getting on a plane (sometime soon) to go out to there are receive this "Pencil", which apparently is a big deal in the design world. Cole (along with some other folks, but mostly Cole) did the video piece and Micah did the music. It truly is a perfect representation of the evolution of font in people's lives and the music is perfect in every way. Congrats guys.

In other news, I am getting on a plane in a couple of hours to head out to San Diego for Bri and Adam's wedding. We had full plans of heading down to TJ like I always do when I go to San Diego to do some personal work. However, due to the recent activity in TJ and from some sound advice from my friend Paul Gero, I think we will just go to La Jolla/Old Town instead.

Next week expect blog posts from the infamous Riviera Maya wedding, an engagement session that was supposed to happen at the salt flats but ended in Provo due to us running AWAY from storm clouds, another YourHeartOut assignment, a family session, a church activity Mother-Daughter night, a bridal session and POSSIBLY the Dallas wedding (but I make no promises). Yes, wedding season is in full swing.

In weather news, I got up this morning around 6am to put the trash cans out and found about a half inch of snow all over the ground. It is May. If anyone has seen Spring or Summer for that matter, tell them they are late for work.

This has been a Jonathan Canlas report, signing out (and back to some last minute packing).

Film vs. Digital vs. Digital vs. Film

DIGITAL SHOOTERS, THIS POST IS FOR YOU!

Clearly I've had a lot of inquiries lately about the upcoming workshop Film is Not Dead. Many are from digital shooters wondering if the workshop is strictly film based. I want to discuss this briefly here to clarify. Even if you are a digital shooter with no intentions of switching to film, the workshop still can and will be highly beneficial to you. Both mediums are absolutely welcome and encouraged.

(insert Reading Rainbow voice)
But don't take my word for it! (/end Reading Rainbow voice)

You can check out these 2 testimonials from past attendees who did not shoot film once (GASP!) at the last workshop:

Ed Pingol
Natalie Norton

Yes, the workshop is called Film in Not Dead but it is about SO much more than that. It is about expanding your vision and showing you that film is not a dead medium. In fact my whole premise behind the workshop is to show that knowledge of film will help you expand your vision as a photographer in general. The bottom line? If you understand the ins and outs of film, your knowledge and skill in the digital world will be honed and polished as a direct result.

There are a few spots left for the 1st session (nov 3rd-6th). If you want to register please send me an email (jonathan[at]jonathancanlasphotography[dot]com) with the subject title "film is not dead".

Mahalo and happy shooting.

Your Heart Out Assignment - JDawgs

If you live in Provo, you know about JDawgs. They have a simple menu, hot dog or polish dog. However the combos are almost unlimited and I recommend the "Rated R" dog. And beyond selling the most hotdogs/polish dogs in Provo, they also cater events which from what I've gathered, happens almost daily.

I've known the owner, Jayson, for a while as I shot his brother's wedding a long time ago, and he is married to my Heidi who is sisters to Kendra who is married to my friend Seth (did you follow that?). And if I did not know him enough already, he has also signed up to attend the Film is Not Dead workshop in Nov. Who knows, maybe one of the days of the workshop we'll be dining on the famous JDawg.

This shoot was for the great folks over at YourHeartOut.

A day at the park - life in horizontal.

Those of you familiar with my work might have noticed that I see my world either vertically or square. I've never been much of a horizontal guy which might be to fault. This was my attempt in seeing horizontally and testing out my new 45mm 2.8 lens for the Contax.

Hotel Riu - Riveira Maya MX - Workers

OKX - made my week.

So, tonight while looking up shows coming to the great beehive state, I saw that Rogue Wave is coming with Neil Halstead...but they are playing with Jack Johnson at the USANA ampitheater which MAKES NO SENSE to me at all. I'm still so going to this show as not only do I love Rogue Wave but Neil Halstead of Mojave 3, FANTASTIC. No offense to Jack Johnson fans, I mean, cmon, I went to high school with the guy (no joke). Anyway, in all this surfing, I found a site called Stereogum which has streaming songs from a tribute album they did for OK Computer. Check out David Bazan's cover of Let Down. It is perfect. I mean, to cover Radiohead songs is a daunting task in and of itself, but I must say, Mr Bazan outdid himself. There are some other great covers as well from John Vanderslice, Vampire Weekend, etc...

And if OK Computer does not tickle your fancy, try the other tribute album they up of REM's Automatic for the People which has the Shout Out Louds, The Meat Puppets (remember them from the early 90's?), and Rogue Wave.

Spend some time on Stereogum a while and you'll find all kinds of gems like THIS. I think I've only scratched the surface of all the great stuff on this site.

Anyway, if any of you want to fore go the forced Jack Johnson viewing to see Rogue Wave, they are playing at Thanksgiving Point (literally my backyard) next month, May 26th.

This post wins for the most links EVER.

Have a great weekend and maybe I'll see some of you at Thanksgiving Point/USUANA.
