Family Vacation to St. Louis

I was born and raised in St. Louis. Well, I lived there until I was 16. It is the longest I've ever lived anywhere. I traveled there with my family back in Sept and met up with my brother and his family. We still have a handful of relatives on my dad's side who live there as well. It was wonderful being able to be together and hang out. We went to the Arch, caught a Cardinal's game (before we knew they would win the world series), went to Happy China (they still remembered us as we went there EVERY Sunday after church with my dad for YEARS), Eckert's Orchard to pick apples/peaches, the Zoo, Ted Drewes, visited our old house my dad built on Ballas Rd (11910 Sackston Ridge Dr in Creve Couer), swam at the hotel pool, and hung out with cousins/family.

I can not recommend enough to photographers that if you want to better your craft, and refine your vision, shooting your vacations/personal work is absolutely key. I did not have the camera the whole time for sure, but I truly believe the worst photo of your family/loved ones is the one you never took.

This was all taken on a Mamiya RZ Pro II with a 110 f/2.8 lens. The super wide shots at the arch are with the 50mm f/4.5 lens. All shot on expired Kodak Portra 160NC circa 2002. Scanned masterfully by Richard Photo Lab.

2000 and 11 - a portfolio review / a year in review

PS, this is not even everything from 2011. This is just what has hit the blog...

Regardless, it's been one hell of a year. I am not a writer in any sense of the word (though this I guess makes me a liar) so I won't attempt to write now. I'm not going to tell you how awesome my job is. Just know that 2011 has been the best of my career/life and I think these photos prove it.

Every year, without fail is better than the last by at least 100x. This is no exaggeration. I've been all over this green earth this year and 2012 has geared itself up to not disappoint either.

I want to publicly thank my wife, Callie, for being my rock. My kids for bringing me the most joy I could ever know. To my studio manager Heather for keeping me afloat. To my assistant Joe Admundsen for keeping me young. And to all the clients and photographers who've hired and trusted me. Know I gave it my all.

And publicly, I would like to thank Eriko Aoya for putting a Canon AE-1 with a 50mm 1.4 lens in my hands back in 1996 in Tokyo Japan. None of this would have happened had you not been so kind and generous. I will forever be indebted to you.

Speaking of 2012, things are going to be a bit different. I only plan on shooting 10 weddings. Yep, you read that right, I am only shooting 10 weddings in 2012. A huge step in a different direction of the once 72 in one year, yeah, 72, by myself. If you are even considering hiring me for your wedding, drop me a line as I am dead serious about capping at 10.

Why you ask? The one thing I really learned in 2011 is that for me to be truly successful, I need to put as much into my family as I do into my business. And that is what is going to happen in 2012.

The FILM IS NOT DEAD workshop is going all over the world this year. From Australia later this month, to Atlanta, to my studio in Orem, to Surrey UK, Boston, Chicago, Vancouver Canada, Ibiza Spain, Charleston, San Miquel Mexico, and then finally the North Shore of Oahu. If you are interested in attending, drop me a line. Space is getting limited and a lot of those mentioned cities are completely sold out.

Pushing myself out of my comfort zone...

If you follow this blog, you know I don't shoot much horz. Nor do I shoot much BW, slow shutter speeds and rarely am I shooting ranger finder cameras. Well, I picked a camera that does nothing but push me out of my comfort zone. It is a Mamiya 7II. It is a medium format rangefinder that is 6x7. The way the camera is built, it just is made for horz shots. And for some reason, I just feel compelled to run BW film through it. Here are the first fruits of my labors with this one. Expect more coming soon.

Children's Miracle Network

I apologize in advance as this is literally the longest blogpost EVER.

Back in Oct, I went to Orlando and DC to follow 50 "Champions" of the Children's Miracle Network. These 50 kids from all 50 states have either overcome, are living and coping with some kind of major illness or injury. For a whole week, these kids, their parents/siblings/grandparents were able to forget their daily struggles, even if for a week, and celebrate the children, the caretakers, and the sponsors who made the week literally, and utterly amazing. There were award ceremonies for the kids, the doctors, the generous donors, and for anyone and everyone involved. They were taken to Disneyworld countless times over 4 days. Got to participate in the parade as Grand Marshall, meet all the characters and just have a good time. And yeah, we got serenaded by David Archuletta a couple times. Got to meet Steve Young, the dude from Dukes of Hazaard, Mary Lou Retton, Merideth Vieira, Mark Wills, and Miss America. From Orlando, we boarded a Delta plane, specifically for the CMN. No security, we just drove up to the tarmac on buses and got on the plane. In DC, they went to various monuments, the White House (no Obama sadly), and got to participate in the changing of the guard at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The week was by far one of the most amazing experiences I've had as a father and photographer getting to know these kids and families. To learn of their lives, conditions, triumphs over diseases, and learning to have hope no matter what. NO.MATTER.WHAT.

I can not thank Aubrey (pictured last being hugged by the champions) & Miranda Children's Miracle Network enough for asking me out to come and do this. They played a larger role with their association with Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City when our Weston was there for his heart condition. I jumped at the opportunity to give back. When they contacted me, they told me previous photographers were commercial shooters who lacked "warmth" and hoped I could bring that to their images. I tried my best.

Also a HUGE thank you to Kodak for generously providing the film to document this event. It was all shot on Kodak Portra 400, Portra 160 and Portra 800. The BW was Illford Delta 3200. And for the camera geeks, this was shot on Contax 645's with 80mm, 140mm, 45mm, and 120mm lenses. I brought the 35mm and the 210 but they never left the bag. I also used a Holga with a Nikon SB80.

And to Richard Photo Lab for providing the masterful processing and scanning of these images. They are such a crucial step in the process of making these images and I want to make sure everyone knows it is they who make me look so good.

A big thank you to Tavis Johnson for coming and assisting me on this trip. Wild, wild adventures with a native american and a grizzly bear.

And I can't post this without thanking my wife, Callie, who whole-heartedly supported me going and doing this shoot 10 days after our son Kalani was born. I have no regrets of going but I will say it was damn good to come home to my wife and kids. Yeah, my wife is super woman and is going straight to heaven, no questions asked.

Go and give of your time and talents you have in anyway. There is no better feeling in this world than giving back and helping others. It is what life is really all about really...

Kalani Simplicio Canlas

So, on Oct 6th, my birthday, Callie and I were out on date night. Having dinner at Porter's Place in Lehi. I was flying out the next morning at 6am to a flight to Atlanta for a wedding on Saturday. Well, during dinner Callie started feeling super uncomfortable. Now mind you, with our other kids, Callie has NEVER gone into labor, EVER. She was always induced or it was a scheduled c-section. She really did not even know what contractions felt like. I know, crazy. Well, we head over to my studio in Orem to grab my camera and to time how quick the contractions were happening, if indeed they were contractions. One call to the doctor and shazaam, off to the hospital we go. Best birthday present ever? Not quite. He was born a little after 1am. We hung out for a bit, and then I drove home, packed, and got on a plane to Atlanta :(. Got back home on Sunday in time to bring both my C(K)al's home.

Today, he is 1 month old. We blessed him on Saturday, the same day we baptized Isaac (CRAZY!). It's been one crazy month for sure and I must let you know, that my wife is literally and utterly amazing.

Kalani is a super healthy kid who does not do much other than sleep, eat, and poop.

4th of July on Kodak Tri-X

This is the first time I've shot any film other than Kodak E100VS through my holga in broad daylight. I had a Nikon SB-80 on the hot shoe as well for fill flash. But hopefully, you can't tell as when I use flash, I don't ever want it to look like flash, especially during the day.

And yeah, if you can't tell, I'm jonsin for more Summer...

A couple of facts about this wedding. This has the largest family formal I've ever shot, EVER (111 people to my counting). And as crazy as it sounds, it took about 8 minutes to set up :). I shot 7 different film stocks at this wedding. Kodak Portra 400, Kodak Portra 400VC, Kodak Portra 400NC, Kodak Portra 160NC, Kodak Ektar, Kodak Portra 800, and a roll of Fuji 160S. Why you ask? As you read this, I am starting FILM IS NOT DEAD in Orem at my studio. This is the first time I've conducted it in my space. It is super exciting as the benefit of doing the workshop at my studio means we can go out and shoot and then come back and develop/scan and see results within an hour or 2. Awesome.

Rick Delos Wells' Celebration of Life

Earlier this month, my son Isaac and I traveled out to Kahuku Hawaii to attend, not a funeral, but a celebration of life for Rick Wells. No funeral, just an open house/pool party with so much food I thought Rick was trying to kill all of us from the grave. Rick was literally a second father to me. I lived with their family when I was a punk kid teenager. They literally changed my life and I owe a lot of who I am today to that man. Rick taught Art at Brigham Young University in Laie Hawaii and influenced me a ton in wanting to teach.

I was really grateful that I could go out there with my son and be with my "family". There is nothing in this world that is more important to me than my family.

Adventure Tuesday's - Ogden UT

Every Tuesday this summer I pack up the 4 oldest kids (Isaac, Ila, Ruby and Lulu), pick up Tavis and his 2 kids (Mia & Parker) and go somewhere in our huge passenger van in UT. This time, we headed north to Ogden to the dinosaur museum and finished off at the Ogden train station. Micah, my brother in law, brought his 2 kids (Nigel & Bradley). And Ryan Muirhead decided to brave the trip as well. 4 dudes, 8 kids, and one passenger van. It is awesome.

Life on Fuji FP-3000B

I've been shooting a lot of the Fuji FP-3000B lately. However, I've switched up cameras. I LOVED my Polaroid 600SE, but I found it a bit limiting. It did not have a lot of versatility to it. So I picked up a Mamiya RZ which as so much versatility to it it is unreal. They both weight about the size of a newborn baby, but the RZ does not go full frame on the instant film. Meaning, it leaves a black border around the image mostly on the left and right of the image. I've cropped these images to get rid of the border for a couple reasons. One, I think the borders were a bit distracting and two I like how the clipped corners are a bit reminiscent of tintypes. Anyway, expect to see more of these images on the blog in the days and months to come. Just wanted to explain the new format before I got bombarded with questions over on formspring :).
