My good friend and mentor, Paul Gero challenged me to start shooting with my fixed 35mm f/2 lens. No big deal right? I usually shoot everything with my 50mm 1.4 Zeiss so, the 35mm is just a bit wider and not that big of an adjustment. Well, the other part of the challenge was to shoot horizontally. If you follow this blog, or know my work, you know I see almost everything in a vertical format. It was a bit challenging, and this is just a small sample of what I came up with. More posts coming this week.

Thanks Paul for the challenge!

I'll be speaking at BYU on Monday...

I graduated from Brigham Young University so it is always a pleasure to be asked to come back and speak to the current photo students there.

I will be speaking to the photo department down at BYU on Monday March 30th at 1-3pm in the HFAC room F250 (2nd floor).

See some of you there!

There is a new Ila in town...

Our neighbors and good friends the Hostetters had a little girl recently and named her Ila (we have an Ila who is named after Callie's grandmother). I hope this name catches on like wild fire. I love the name Ila (pronounced eye-la).

Xango commercial shoot - Ana Mann

I got hired last minute (literally like 2 days before the shoot) to fly out to Hadley MA to do a commercial shoot for Xango. They were doing a story on one of their distributors Ana Mann and her husband. It will be in the next Go Magazine and the cover as well. I have yet to see what the creative team did with the layout. Hopefully, I'll get my hands on one of the mags when it hits stands.

Thanks Dainon for the fun times.

F is for Failure

video
My brother in law did the music for this piece. I have watched the video maybe like twice but have had the song looped for hours on end while working at my office. It is great music that can stand on its own independent of the piece.

Micah Dahl Anderson. Ridiculously awesome music for media.

Check it out.

Greg Ruffing - Yard Sale

{images by Greg Ruffing}

Another gem find thanks to Google reader. Go check out Greg Ruffing's work, and the gallery "YARD SALE". This body of work is totally mind-blowing. Actually, all of the work on his site is really fantastic. I just love how mid-west all of his work feels, even the color.

And the best part? He's got a blog too...

Thank you google reader...

On the road...

It has been non-stop travel for me lately since last Friday. I picked up a last minute job for XanGo out in Hadley MA which I flew out on Friday (unfortunately not on Southwest), shot Saturday and came home that night. Monday, I got on another plane (thankfully Southwest), for San Fran for a bridal shoot and the ever so gut busting funny movie White on Rice premier at the Kabuki Theater in Japantown. And tomorrow I get on another plane (thankfully Southwest).

Traveling, especially really early in the morning, kind of feels like the song/video above.

More posts coming soon from a wedding in American Fork UT, Laguna Beach CA and a ton of personal work from Seattle. Stay tuned.

Oh, I am headed to Singapore in April (5-11). If anyone has any suggestions of places to go/eat/shoot, comment away!

V. 2.0 Testimonail - Ali Smith

Ali just sent over her uberly awesome testimonial from the workshop last Nov...

"I got lucky in 2004 when I selected Jon to shoot my wedding without so much as a referral or testimonial. I spied some of his images in a Utah bride book and liked what I saw: photos that were fresh, candid, colorful and slightly editorial … and kept my fingers crossed. Five years and countless referrals later, I’ve never looked back.

What I didn’t know then was that the age of online social networking was just around the corner (as was Jon’s reputation as a totally legit photographer), and, as a freelance writer and editor, blogging would soon become a professional outlet for me. And what blog doesn’t need good photographs? Jon was an immediate supporter of local-centric Your Heart Out, which I operate and edit, and knew of my dabbling interest in photography thanks to my Flickr account and personal blog.

He suggested that I look into his “Film Is Not Dead” workshop to learn not just about film photography and photography in general, but to boost the photos that are vital and necessary to any semi-professional website. Everyone likes a pretty picture.

So, how much photography know-how did I have? Not much. I had taken a couple four-week courses, but my know-how paled in comparison to the professionally-trained attendees who became my classmates. Still, Jon tailored the class to fit my needs by providing one-on-one counseling, sharing his business savvy, and by taking the time to answer each and every one of my novice questions—even when they dealt with my novice camera. His open-door policy is no joke. You can ask this guy practically anything and you’ll get an honest answer.

Though I still haven’t converted to film, the composition and quality of my photos have improved tenfold. When I head out to a new boutique or bakery, I am confident that my images will be publishable.

Note to bloggers: You will never regret an investment in your photography skills with “Film Is Not Dead.” Your blog will love you for it; your readers will love you for it. Your advertisers will probably love you for it, too. And your stomach will thank you for eating Callie’s delicious food. My 7-month-pregnant tummy definitely did.

Thanks, Jon! Not only for being a great mentor, but also for driving all the way to our apartment in Salt Lake’s Avenues a few years ago to drop off one photo for me in time for Christmas."

There are still a few spots left for V. 3.0 in July out in San Francisco. Check the website for more information or shoot me an email at:
