The Canlas Family

Yeah, you read right, this is the Canlas Family. Well, my brother Jason, his wife Karen and their uber cute son Grant. They were in town this past weekend from Texas for some skiing, hanging out, eating around the good eats in Provo, and just for some r&r. I wish they lived closer...

And yes, this is probably the first studio images (3 lights + a white seamless) I've ever posted on the blog. All of these images were shot in my living room and then on the front porch FYI. And it is probably the most horizontal shots I've ever taken in one shoot as well...

Love you Ja, Karen & Grant!

Looking to get some family portraits done as well? You can read the 411 HERE.

Grant inherited his blonde hair form his birth parents. We had Jon take our pictures again to update our adoption profile on LDS Family services' website. We've been up for about a year now and were looking for something to create a spark in those looking at our profile. If anyone can create sparks of interest with the use of photos, it's Jon.

Feel free to visit and share our profile with anyone you feel may be interested: http://jasonandkaren.weebly.com. *The pictures shown on the weebly website will be replaced soon.

I'm finally exposing myself as being one of your blog stalkers for the past 6 months. I really enjoy looking at your work, it's inspiring and makes me want to improve. Keep up the great work! Hope to see you at WPPI!! Can't wait!

Great photos. I especially dig the one second from the bottom. Blue shirt and blue eyes combined with the shallow depth of field make for a great image. My favorite part about studio lighting is they way eyes look.

whitney, i used 3 lights.

they were all alien bees 800ws. there is a 10ft white seamless behind the subject. to camera right, there was a 3x4ft softbox with an extra diffuser inside (velcro see through clothe). behind me is a 5ft umbrella. on the background is one light with a 40* honeycomb on it.

key light was the soft box. umbrella was the fill and it was 1 stop less than the key. the honeycomb was 1 stop hotter than the key which blew out most of the background. preferably i would like to have 2 lights on the background to ensure all areas were blown out, but due to the fact that the shoot was impromptu in my living room, and the lack of space and electrical sockets AND the fact that it would trip the electrical breaker every 4 shots or so with 4 lights, I kept it to 3.

there you go.

long live horizontal shooting, esp since you are the king.

I've only just discovered your blog and I've been scrolling through the different posts. But I could not leave without saying that I think your sister in law, Karen, is possibly to most beautiful woman I have ever seen. There is something about here that is so... I can't even say. She looks like someone I would want to claim as a best friend. haha. Anyway, just thought I'd put that out there! :)
